This project documents storefronts across New York City during the Covid-19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter protests. During this time, many luxury brands and New York City department stores boarded up their windows. For several weeks, I explored the city to research, map out and photograph.
At first glance, the photos bring a mysterious and formal beauty to the foreground. High architecture and luxury signage juxtaposed with cheap plywood. The city’s iconic shopping districts seemed to inadvertently transform into a massive sculptural installation. A closer look reveals a deeper social and political story.
